The great wall around Japan

The word "Great wall" is of course famous for Chinese construction which is visible even from the international space station. But the great wall I am going to talk about is not the visible one but invisible one around our country Japan.

In Japan we have huge domestic market consist of more than 120M of population with strong purchasing power. Despite of the global horrible economic condition our currency become higher and higher. It means our purchasing power is still increasing now. (It is not always so simple but...) Additionally we have a lot of advantages for long term business relationship, stability of the country, the culture based on mutual trust, social infrastructure, wide range of high-tech supporting industries. For many foreign companies it should be attractive to penetrate into Japanese market not only for huge domestic market but also for the access of even larger asian market including chinese through Japanese giant companies.

But the problems are like that, it takes long to get return out of new business here in many case. It is mainly due to the difference of our culture and system from the rest of the world. It might be a quite big factor of unknown for many foreigners. Thus it is quite big wall for them especially the company of smaller scale. That might be a reason why many of those company choose EU or US market for their area for penetration. Because people may feel it easier to understand the business culture and language there and they feel that the process is shorter and less expensive.  Language and communication is also the problem. Basically our society is not designed to communicate with foreigner using other language. Thus it is not easy to communicate with the people in English. Surprisingly it is not only for normal people but including the people who is relatively highly educated. (But people knows quite a lot from translations.)

However it is not the best strategy to miss lucrative Japanese market. You can enjoy ideal condition for long term once you could successfully penetrate into. Actually it is not really difficult with  some support.
